Final Paper
Due: May 6, 2016 at 5:00 pm

Required Format: —Part I may be between 4 and 8 pages in length.
—Part II may be between 3 and 5 pages in length, excluding Journal entries.

Together, your final product should be between 8 and 10 pages in length.

--All material should be double spaced, in 12-point font, and include page numbers.

Your final paper consists of two parts—which together call upon you to reflect upon and integrate concepts of mindfulness and leadership. Below are instructions for your paper.

Part I: Mindful Leadership

You have joined a law firm and, after working there for several years, have been appointed to the firm’s recently established Leadership Development Committee. The Committee is gathering ideas to propose to the Executive Committee for a project that the firm may undertake to benefit the firm, its members, and its clients.

You and two colleagues propose that the firm establish a mindful leadership initiative that weaves mindfulness into the firm’s culture and specifically addresses leadership.

Some members of the firm express skepticism about the project and the Executive Committee concedes it would be helpful to have more information about the worthwhileness and efficacy of mindfulness leadership programs in legal, corporate and business settings.

The firm has not had any prior experience with mindfulness programs, and the few leadership trainings it has organized have not been particularly successful. The firm members tend to view leadership traits as fairly obvious and straightforward: someone either “has them or not” and “is a leader or not.”

The Executive Committee is intrigued with your idea, however. The firm’s managing partner and several senior partners recently attended a mindful leadership workshop with business leaders from across the globe and they are convinced of its value. At the same time, they appreciate the importance of establishing buy-in by those less informed about mindfulness.

The Executive Committee asks for a more detailed proposal so they can learn more about mindfulness, about leadership, and better understand if and how leadership development can be aided by mindfulness principles.

You are tasked with coordinating with your colleagues and serving as the primary architect of the proposal the executive committee has requested in order to decide whether to approve the mindfulness leadership initiative.

In crafting the proposal, consider:

a. making the case for mindfulness
b. explaining what mindfulness is
c. describing how to practice mindfulness
d. explaining the relationship between mindfulness and leadership
e. offering examples of how mindfulness exercises and insights can enhance the cultivation of leadership
f. providing examples of the ways that mindfulness can be integrated into the day to day lives of firm members while at work.
g. establishing a methodology that allows the mindful leadership initiative to be responsive to the arrival of new employees

Part II: Self-Leadership and Leadership Reflection

Review your Mindful Leadership Journal entries and write about your experience. Be sure to address separately (1) your efforts to develop greater focus vis a vis your smart devices and social media, (2) your meetings with your mindfulness partner, and (3) working with your group on your group presentation). Give thought to discussing what you assumed, challenges you experienced, what you learned, and open avenues for further personal and professional exploration and growth. Refer to specific portions of your Journal to support your writing and attach your journal to the paper.

General Instructions

In drafting your paper, you are to draw on the class reading assignments, class discussion, website resources, your personal story, and any other materials you deem to be relevant.

Your paper will be evaluated on the quality of the content, the mastery with which you weave together principles of leadership and mindfulness, and your use of resources to develop and support your responses.

Please attend to proper citation as you reference the various readings, and be attentive to style, grammar and punctuation.
